Ever since I first started making websites back in 1999, I always loved to find a newspaper look, or a magazine look. A lot of sites claim their template and themes are magazine or newspaper style, but it is very rare when I find a nice one. This is the one.

Even when I use WordPress themes, I always try to get a news magazine or a newspaper look. I think it looks professional.

There is only one unobtrusive link in the footer. You can change the wording if you like, but the link must remain intact.

I often use this kind of web template for a sales page or landing page. It looks like a blank piece of paper. As you add more content, it stretches and gets longer to accommodate it. It loads super fast because there is not much to it. And it looks great. It’s completely free. All we ask is you leave our link in the footer.

All you have to do is, open the free landing page, save as complete web page, and do what you will.

Not only that, but there is actually a government web page proclaiming the fact at Usability.gov. Not only are the web templates free, but they actually tell you how to make a website! I never would have guessed it.

Well, I went through a long list of government websites and tried to save them on my computer as an HTML file. I had a slight problem with many of them because they were SHTML. I couldn’t figure out how to download the web template from those. And i had a little struggle with some of the ASP pages too. Fortunately, many of them are in PHP, HTM and HTML format.

I saved them all as HTM format, so they can be easily edited with any common free HTML editor.

Anyway, enough about my troubles. Here’s the list of free web templates from the US government. All of them are public domain, so no link back is necessary. However, if you feel like giving me a little credit for my hard work, you can give me a link somewhere on it.

There are 16 of them, and they are all worth looking at. I only saved the coolest templates. They will open in a new tab (or window).

I looked so hard, for months, at every so-called magazine/news style theme before I found Chronicle. Finally, a professional looking news theme. This is another one of those themes that come with more files (plugins, readme) than just the theme- so you’ll have to unzip it, then find the theme folder and zip that one up before you upload it. But it’s well worth it. Truly a premium quality WordPress theme for free.

6. Global News 1.0 by InstantShift

Another great them I had a tough time finding. I wanted a pure newspaper look for one of my sites. I struggled with trying to clone LATimes or WSJ, but that would have been nearly impossible. Then I found this premium quality free WordPress theme.

7. Magazine Basic 2.6.12 by c.bavota

This is probably the one theme with the most versatility. It does just about everything and does it easily. Another true premium quality free WordPress theme.
